Excavations
The National Museum of Antiquities has been working on an excavation project in the Egyptian village of Saqqara since 1975, carrying out research and excavations for a few weeks each year. The main objective of the archaeological research at the Tell Damiyah site in Jordan is to reconstruct the occupational history of the site from 1400 to 500 BC.

A Roman idyll: villas in Limburg
In Limburg there were many villas in Roman times, the largest concentration in the Netherlands at the time. The Roman term ‘villa’ was roughly equivalent to ‘country estate’. These country estates functioned as arable farms, and played a key role in the food supply to the Roman cities and the army. The Limburg Museum, the Thermenmuseum and the National Museum of Antiquities manage a wealth of excavated material about this important part of our history, but yet to be developed or published.

The Year 1000
In 2023, the National Museum of Antiquities (RMO) aims to present a retrospective on the Netherlands in the 10th and 11th century in a European context. The aim of the project is to realise a new and comprehensible image of the period around the year 1000 in the Netherlands, by means of an inventory of archaeological finds, remains of buildings, and objects from the 10th and 11th century, plus a synthesis of research into those, and to communicate this image with a large and varied audience through an exhibition, book, and film.

Are you a student, a researcher, or someone who takes an interest in antiquity? Come and pay a visit to the academic library of the National Museum of Antiquities. You will find a rich collection of more than 30,000 books, journals, offprints, early printed books, and auction catalogues. There are publications on all the museum’s various collecting areas: Ancient Egypt, the classical world (Greeks, Romans, and Etruscans), the ancient Near East, and the early history of the Netherlands (until 1500).

Reasearch by external parties
The National Museum of Antiquities has in its care a sizeable collection of archaeological objects. The Museum itself conducts research on its collection, but it also facilitates a great many requests submitted by external researchers. To ensure that the growing number of research projects on objects are conducted with all due safety and care, we attach a number of conditions. These are designed to ensure that decisions are weighed carefully, with the aim of protecting the collection’s future and securing its integrity.

Conferences and congresses
Read about upcoming conferences and past congresses, organized by the National Museum of Antiquities, like the international Dorestad congresses, which were held in 2009 and 2014. In 2019, the third Dorestad congress will take place. Details will be announced soon. International experts discussed engraved gems on a conference that took place on 3 and 4 November 2016.
